Photovoltaics (PV) are devices that generate electricity when exposed to light. They covert radiation energy, particularly solar energy, into electric energy. Since 1958 photovoltaics is used to supply energy to space vehicles with solar cells. Nowadays it is also used on the earth to the stream production and finds application on roof surfaces, with light machines, in pocket calculators, on sound insulation walls or on free surfaces.

Photovoltac system consists of several components. To built up solar modules, several solar cells are typically connected in a row.

Large installations of photovoltaic elements can be arranged into powerplants.

A special case of photovoltaic system is building integrated photovoltaic system.
